“To Gyumri revival” was the first toast made by the honorary guests of a street festival in Gyumri, marking the second phase of a tourist attractions enhancement initiative implemented by the Armenian Monuments Awareness Project (AMAP) with the support of CAPS, Vivacell, the Italian Honorary Consul and the RA Ministry of Culture.
As the famous Gyumri saying goes “The parade passes through my house”, the residents of Ghorghanian Street, a historic Gyumri district, could see the street festival through the windows of their houses.
Ancient carpets, old pictures of the street buildings displayed on the houses, dancers in national dress, art and craft works – all spoke about the uniqueness of this old historic Armenian city with distinct style.
The historic Ghorghanian Street represents an open air museum preserving, old-style houses, each having its own story and character that even many locals are unaware of. The multilingual interpretation boards, installed within the framework of the tourist attractions enhancement project, tell the history of the street buildings and provide a valuable experience for tourists visiting Gyumri as well as for local people.
“By offering signs and quality information, we move Armenia closer to world best practices – it’s a minimum requirement for tourists traveling thousands of miles. The result will be an increase in visitors, which develops tourism as a priority industry and grows the Armenian economy.” Hayley Alexander, CAPS Chief of Party said at the press conference in Gyumri and expressed readiness to further support the AMAP project.
In the coming months AMAP together with its partners will also install such interpretation boards at Khor Virap, Noravank and Zvartnots temple. 20 Jul 2008

A Fresno photo exhibit from January featuring images of famous writer William Saroyan now is on view at the California State Capitol Museum in Sacramento.
The black-and-white photographs, all by award-winning photographer Boghos Boghossian, were taken of Saroyan on visits to his ancestral homeland of Armenia in 1976 and 1978. The Boghossian pictures capture the dramatic visage of an older Saroyan in different moods and
surroundings.
The free exhibition started June 30 and runs through August 24. The original Fresno City Hall show was curated by Varoujan Der Simonian of the Armenian Museum of Fresno. It was part of the centennial year celebrations marking Saroyan's birth in Fresno on August 31, 1908. (Saroyan died in Fresno, at age of 72, on May 18, 1981.)
The Sacramento exhibition has been redefined with the help of museum curator John Mello, but the photos are the same. The exhibition was made possible through the efforts of Assembly Member Paul Krekorian, D-Burbank, and the California State Assembly Rules Committee. It's co-sponsored by the Armenian Technology Group Inc. and the Armenian Heritage Museum.
