FIRST ARMENIAN ACTION FILM RELEASED ABOUT KARABAKH WAR
ArmeniaNow Journalism, Yerevan, 29 June

Last week “Destiny”, the first fictional film about the Karabakh war, was shown in Yerevan and Stepanakert.
Vardanyan is Armenia’s Rambo in “Destiny”
Gor Vardanyan, the scriptwriter, major actor and the producer of the film, had been thinking and dreaming of shooting a film about the Karabakh war long ago.

“Every time I initiated it I felt we were not ready yet. My previous films – the “Choice”, “Unwritten Law” -- were a kind of preparatory, experimental films. We dared to reflect on this topic only after them,” says Vardanyan. At a cost of $3.8 million, “Destiny” is the most expensive film ever made in Armenia.

The full hall of the Moscow cinema from time to time interrupted the “action” film with applause and fevered excitement.
The nearly two-hour long film tells about the beginning of the Karabakh movement, particularly the Operation “Koltso” (“Ring” in Russian) organized with the joint efforts of the Soviet Army and the Azerbaijani police.

“The plot of the film is based on true historical facts, we have used some 300 true stories and the heroes have their prototypes in the real life,” says Vardanyan.

Some of the main heroes have been participants to the war and the greater part of the villagers included in the mass scenes are the heroes of the true stories. The events of the film begin developing in 1985 in Afghanistan where Gor, the main hero, was on military service. He, along with his special detachment appears surrounded and only he and his friend Zhenya survive. Saving the friend’s life, Gor is taken to prison by the mojaheeds and only a happy accident saves his life. Later he meets Zhenya, but on the other side of the barricades.

Returning to the native village Gor decides to leave his military life and devote himself to family.

Later in 1991 the Azerbaijani OMON (Russian abbreviation for Militia Detachment for Special Purposes) threatens Gor’s village. The villagers decide to resist, but Gor refuses, as he doesn’t believe they can forcedly deport Armenians and he trusts in the Soviet Army he has served in. This confidence turns fatal for Gor as he loses his parents and the seven-year-old son.

“We don’t have the right to die; we have to fight to live,” the hero says, rallying a band of untrained villagers who’ve never held a weapon, but are driven by survival.

“The plot of the film is structured to spread the idea that one should rely only on his own forces and that is the only way to win,” says Vardanyan.

The anti-hero of the film, the Azeri head of police, is played by war veteran Martin Yesayan who was wounded three times in Karabakh and also taken prisoner.

“It was very difficult to embody someone you hate with all your essence, but I found supernatural force in me to play the role, but after the show in Yerevan I felt bad because of the excitement and an ambulance was called. Simply no one could embody that man better: I fought against them and know their every step and movement,” Yesayan told ArmeniaNow by phone from Karabakh.

Artistic director Armen Mazmanyan is also a veteran who has also participated in the Karabakh war and plays a character similar to his own experience.

“The creation of this film was an extremely important event, the Azerbaijanis have already five fiction films they used to spread the history they want across the world,” Mazmanyan says. “For me personally it was dramatically difficult to play in this film and to recall all those things I have experienced in my real life.”

After the ceasefire Azerbaijanis indeed managed to shoot 5 fiction films, while this is Armenia’s first.

“Better late than never, the new generation will at least see it and will be raised with this spirit of a hero. Of course, no one has forgotten those cruel years but film is a necessity, since the strong national spirit should be trained by this kind of means,” says writer Razmik Davoyan.

ONE CULTURE, ONE WEEK: SECOND PAN ARMENIAN FESTIVAL KICKS OFF IN YEREVAN
ArmeniaNow independant Journalism, Yerevan, 23 June

Yerevan will again be a city of “Nareks” and “Nares” beginning today (June 23), as the second annual Pan Armenian Cultural Festival, “One Nation, One Culture” begins.
During the week-long festival the weekdays will also be renamed in Yerevan; Sunday will become Literature Day, Monday – the Fine Art Day, Tuesday – the Music Day, etc.

This year 1000 artists from the Diaspora and 1000 from Armenia and Karabakh will be participating in the festival – 500 more than last year.
Jivan Movsisyan, Executive Secretary of the Agency for Ties with the Diaspora at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, says the interest towards the festival is tremendous this year.

“People have appealed from countries from where we would never expect to hear – for instance, a choir of 75 singers is arriving from Australia, a big group is arriving also from Kazakhstan,” says Movsisyan.

This year also the festival is organized under Presidential authority, with about $280,000 in funds from the state budget.
“There are no unnecessary expenses this year, this is the least that is needed for organizing the festival; all the participants from the Diaspora will cover their own expenses, the government has undertaken the expenses only for Karabakh and Javakh delegations,” said Tamar Poghosyan, the foundation’s executive director.

Assistant to the President Vigen Sargsyan says all the pan-Armenian events should be of regular, traditional nature to allow strengthening the Armenia-Diaspora ties.

“It’s high time to stop thinking of what could Diaspora give Armenia and start thinking of what should Armenia do to strengthen the ties with the Diaspora, to fortify the cultural, educational and scientific institutions of the Diaspora,” says Sargsyan.

The organizers of the festival share these aims.

According to Armen Manukyan, the Art Manager of the Festival, the main cultural groups acting in the Diaspora are of amateur nature and the joint concert, communication and experience sharing with the professional groups from Armenia can be a big progress for them.

During the festival days almost all the parks, concert halls and galleries in the central part of the city will be busy. Artistic groups will visit also Syunik, Vayots Dzor, Shirak, Lori and Aragatsotn provinces, as well as Karabakh.

“This is an extremely important phenomenon for all of us – we are really united with one nation, one culture. These seven days will be unforgettable for all of us,” says Sonya Varuzhan, a singer from Great Britain.

The directors of this year opening ceremony will be Hrachya Ashughyan and young director Lusine Martirosyan.

They say there will be new dancing performances and the whole concert will be non-stop in one joint staging.

“The primary aim of the concert scenario is to present the whole cultural potential, from architecture to the art of singing and that will be done by a synthesis of various genres of art – theater, cinema, dances, songs – this will be a real novelty,” says Martirosyan.

And another novelty will be presented by the organizers of the festival: during the seven days of the festival a Fest Club will be open for all the participants and accredited journalists at the Avant-garde Folk Music Club every night from 11 to enjoy Armenian pop and jazz musicians’ performance free of charge.

MINISTER OSKANIAN ADDRESSES INAUGURAL SESSION OF UN HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL IN GENEVA
Yerkir Newspaper, Yerevan, 22 June

Minister Oskanian attended and addressed the first session of the newly-formed UN Human Rights Council. The opening ceremony on Monday was attended by UN SG Kofi Annan as well as High Commissioner for Human Rights, Louise Arbour.
The Minister said, “Globalization and the electronic media enhance our knowledge and increase our liability. It is as easy to look into our neighbor’s living room as our own. To hear the screams next door and do nothing will be as difficult as ignoring uproar at home. We are now the first generation who simply cannot afford to do so. And ironically, we are the first generation that is able to afford to systematically, fundamentally address the problems and even the crises. We can muster the time, skills and resources to construct a new pro-active, daring, spirited international system that not only has the moral authority but also the tenacity to protect the powerless.”
In speaking about Armenia’s neighbors and regional security, Minister Oskanian noted that “Armenia has and continues to promote stronger international mechanisms to prevent and eradicate the crime of genocide, and all of its precursors including efforts, too often successful, at not just cleansing a region of its indigenous people, but also erasing their memory. . Even today, in the 21st century, we have watched helplessly as the spiritual and cultural markers of our people are decimated.”
In speaking about the present state of negotiations with Azerbaijan on the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, the Armenian Foreign Minister said, “If Azerbaijan’s one step forward, one step back approach in the negotiations was simply alarming, their recent, desperate offers of autonomy are concrete examples of a retreat from the letter and spirit of these talks, and clearly not in sync with international trends. Offering autonomy to a people who have for nearly two decades been in control of their lives on their own historic lands is at the very least, self-deception.”

TOP HIERARCH OF ARMENIAN CHURCH GOES ON TO VISIT TO ISTANBUL
ArmenPress, Yerevan, 20 June

Supreme Hierarch of the Armenian Apostolic Church, Catholicos Garegin II, left for Istanbul Tuesday night on what is to be the third ministerial visit of Turkey by the head of the Armenian Church over a period of 45 years. The rarity of a Catholicos visit dates back to Catholicos Vazgen I in 1961 to attend the funeral of Armenian Patriarch Garegin Khachaturian and Catholicos Garegin I paid a visit in 1996 at the invitation of the Eastern Orthodox Patriarch of the Universe.
He is making the weeklong trip to Turkey at the invitation of Armenian Patriarch in that country, Meerop Mutaffian, and the Eastern Orthodox Patriarch of the Universe, Bartholomew I.
Spokesmen for the Chancellery of the Armenian Church in the holy monastery of Echmiadzin told Itar-Tass Garegin II’s brotherly talks with His Holiness Bartholomew will be devoted to discussion of church relations.
Garegin II is expected bless the Armenian believers in Istanbul ,numbering about 60,000 people, and to meet with intellectuals and young members of the Armenian community.
June 25, he will serve the divine liturgy in the Armenian Cathedral of the Virgin Mary in the district of Kumkapi.
Garegin II is also expected to have a meeting with the Governor of Istanbul – an event acquiring political significance in view of the fact that even 15 years after proclamation of independence by Armenia the two neighboring countries still do not have diplomatic relations.
Armenian official quarters voice readiness to establish diplomatic relations with Turkey without any prior conditions but the Turkish government says, on its part, it will normalize relations with Yerevan on the condition that Armenia stop a campaign for international recognition of genocide against Armenian people in the Ottoman Empire and drop support of ethnic Armenians in the Azerbaijani region of Karabakh.
The Patriarchate in Turkey is fourth largest of the Armenian Church embracing 46 parishes. Before the tragic events of 1915, the Church had 1,181 parishes and 132 monasteries on Turkish territory.

INTERNATIONAL GENOCIDE MEMORIAL MAY BE CONSTRUCTED IN CALIFORNIA
PanARMENIAN.Net, June 14

The Armenian National Committee of America Western Region expressed it support this week for AB 1210, legislation that calls for the construction of an International Genocide Monument in Sacramento’s State Capitol Park. The California State Legislature took the first step this year in working to construct an International Genocide Memorial in the State’s Capitol. Authored by State Assembly member Lloyd Levine, AB 1210 was introduced in 2005 and is currently in the Senate Appropriations Committee. If passed, the legislation would call for the establishment of an International Genocide Memorial Commission to determine the design, construction, and dedication for a memorial, on the grounds of Capitol Park, to honor genocide victims.

The State of California has a longstanding history in protecting the rights, history and culture of all its citizens, including those who are survivors and descendents of genocide and crimes against humanity. An International Genocide Monument in the State Capitol would not only serve as a symbol for remembrance of past genocides, but also as a tool to educate thousands of students who visit the State Capitol annually for class trips. If constructed, the monument would recognize crimes perpetrated against the Sudanese in Darfur and the Tutsis in Rwanda, the Armenians, and the Jews, among others. Noting the ANCA-WR’s support of AB 1210, Chairman Steven Dadaian said, “The passage of this legislation that would bring about a permanent reminder of past atrocities, is especially important in the face of genocides that are still shamefully denied today, such as the Armenian Genocide.”

On behalf of all Armenian Americans, the ANCA-WR commends the California legislature and Assembly member Levine’s leadership for their efforts to create an enduring symbol of remembrance and recognition in California for all victims of genocide and injustice, reported the ANCA.

The orchestra has had opportunity during the last 15 years to increase its performing level, having perfect performances not only in Armenia, but also in many countries of the world, presenting with honor the Armenian classic music art,” is mentioned in the APO’s message of gratitude.
The orchestra headed by APO Artistic Head and Principal Conductor Eduard Topchian performed famous classic works.
In 1924, Composer Alexander Spendiarian, who had moved to Yerevan from Russia, headed in the 2nd part of his author’s concert an 18-person orchestra formed of Conservatory teachers and students, thus proving the possibility of creating in Armenia a symphonic orchestra completed with local personnel.
Alexander Spendiaryan’s words that “the time will come when our, still modest, pupil’s orchestra will bear proudly the honorary name “State Orchestra of Armenia” became real. After Alexander Spendiarian many other famous composers headed it but since 2000 the orchestra has been headed by Eduard Topchian.

ARMENIAN - FRENCH RELATIONSHIPS
Hayastani Hanrapetutyun, Yerevan, June 10

This summer a big group of French tourists will visit Lori. It’s already fixed that they will spend their vacation in “the second floor” of Lori region: in one of the picturesque corners-Odzuni. The members of the group will stay in the homes of the dwellers of this village. This village is not only one of the biggest villages in the country but also is famous for its beauty, historical monuments and amazing sights.
Nothing happens without a reason. The interest of French people didn’t appear just by itself. It’s a result of hard work. Eight years ago a contract was signed between Lori and the Alp-Kot d’Azur Province, in which tourism development possibilities were also included. The trade-industry president of Marseille Simon Azizyan and Lori regional head Henrik Kochinyan had thought a plan for 2006. For this reason residents of Vanadzor have been sent to France to be trained in the field of tourism.

VIENNA BOYS CHOIR IN YEREVAN
“Perspectives XXI” Seventh Music International Festival and Austrian Airlines are presenting legendary "VIENNA BOYS CHOIR" in Yerevan, June 20, 2006, 7 p.m. at Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall.

In 1498, more than half a millennium ago, Emperor Maximilian I of Austria has ordered to establish the Boys Choir. Until 1918, the choir sang exclusively for the court, at mass, at private concerts and functions and on state occasions. Musicians like Heinrich Isaac, Paul Hofhaimer, Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber, Johann Joseph Fux, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Antonio Caldara, Antonio Salieri and Anton Bruckner worked with the choir. Some were choristers themselves, such as Franz Schubert, and later the brothers Franz Joseph and Michael Haydn. Today, there are about 100 choristers between the ages of 10 and 14, divided into four touring choirs. The four choirs give about 300 concerts and performances each year in front of almost half a million people. They visit virtually all European countries, and they are frequent guests in Asia, Australia and the Americas. Together with members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Vienna State Opera Chorus, the Wiener Sängerknaben maintain the tradition of the imperial musicians: as Hofmusikkapelle they provide the music for the Sunday Mass in Vienna's Imperial Chapel, as they have done since 1498. Gerald Wirth succeeded Norbert Balatsch as the choir's artistic director in 2001. In recent years, they have performed with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Oslo Philharmonic and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Recent guest conductors include Pierre Boulez, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Mariss Jansons, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Kent Nagano and Seiji Ozawa. In the 1970s, the choir started to perform a cappella arrangements of songs by the Beatles. In 2002, the boys recorded their first ever pop CD, with songs by Celine Dion, Madonna and Robbie Williams.
