FREE ENTRANCE TO THE ARMENIAN MUSEUMS

Free entrance to the Armenian museums will be announced on the evening of May 18, offering visitors a chance to make a tour of several museums in just one night.

The action aims at raising youth awareness on high art.

The event has been held since 1999, with the assistance of EU and UNESCO.

"ASIAN CORNER" IN AVETIK ISAHAKAYAN LIBRARAY

"Asian Corner" opened today in the branch of Avetik Isahakyan Central Library, where books representing the culture and economy of China, Kazakhstan and India, magazines and other items were presented.

According to Indian Ambassador to Armenia Malhotra, the idea of opening of this center is highly appreciable, for it will help Armenians have better idea of the culture of the Asian countries. "All of us are ready to support the development of this corner," she said.

Lebanese Ambassador to Armenia Gebrail Geara noted that he will soon provide books to the library.

The books and materials were provided to the library by the Embassies of China, Kazakhstan and India in Armenia.

LEGENDARY GUITARIST JOHN MCLAUGHLIN IN ARMENIA

Legendary guitarist John Mclaughlin and his The 4th Dimension jazz-fusion group's concert will take place on April 28 at the National Academic Theater of Ballet and Opera.

McLaughlin as a virtuous guitarist is admitted by world-known musicians such as Carlos Santana, Jeff Beck, Paco de Lucia, Al Di Meola, Jaco Pastorius and others. Most of them have worked with McLaughlin in multiple joint projects.

Armenian musician Arto Tuncboyajyan, the soloist of Armenian Navy Band, who has already had the pleasure of playing with McLaughlin, will join the concert as a guest with his original music and character.

Vibrographus, the organizer of the event, promises a real celebration for those who know and love McLaughlin and for those who will listen to him for the first time.

EXCAVATIONS OF TIGRANAKERT TO LAUNCH IN JUNE

The excavations of the town of Tigranakert in Artsakh will be conducted this year from June 15 to August 25. According to the source this year the excavations are "promising", previously very interesting tombs have been discovered and their excavations will continue.

The excavations will be held with the support of the NKR authorities who have released 30 million AMD. Tigranakert Museum will function in the territory of the 18th century castle where currently renovation works are in process. The museum is intended to be operated in mid May.

Two films are being prepared about Tigranakert and in 1-2 months will be shown in Armenia and if possible in Artsakh as well.
A book about the excavations will be published at the end of the year.

NATIONAL GALLERY VI INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL

Yerevan will host National Gallery VI International Music Festival from April 21 to June 2.

"Musicians from Armenia, Russia, Sweden and Slovenia will be participating".

The Festival will open with a concert of Youth State Orchestra of Armenia and honored artist of Armenia, pianist Svetlana Navasardyan. Duo Claripiano from Sweden will perform Sen-Sans and Shubert’s works on April 29.

Swedish violin player Hugo Tiziati and Armenian pianist Hayk Melikyan will present modern classical music, including Tigran Mansuryan’s works, on May 5. Armenian State Chamber Choir (conductor Robert Mlkeyan) will perform on May 14.

The closing ceremony will be held on June 2.

JIVAN GASPARYAN RECEIVES A STAR OF COMMONWEALTH PRIZE 2010

The names of the first laureates of the CIS Star of Commonwealth Prize 2010 are already announced. The award ceremony was held today at the Pashkov House of the Russian State Library, Moscow.

The award ceremony was founded 2009 by the CIS Humanitarian Cooperation Council and the Interstate Humanitarian Cooperation Fund. Three nominees from each member-state of the Interstate Humanitarian Cooperation Fund had been represented for the Star of Commonwealth prize. Star of Commonwealth includes three nominations: achievements in science and education, achievements in culture and arts and achievements in humanitarian activity.

The prizes for the achievements in science education, culture and arts were awarded to Igor Fedorov, rector of the Bauman Moscow Technical University, Pulat Babadzhanov, Tajik astrophysicist, Tair Salakhov, Azerbaijani artist, Sultan Raev, Kyrgyz writer. The prizes for humanitarian activity were awarded to the spouse of Kazakhstan President, composer Alexandra Pakhmutova and poet Nikolai Dobronravov. Each of the 9 laureates was awarded 2 million rubles.

World-famous Armenian musician Jivan Gasparyan is among the laureates as well. He received a Star of Commonwealth prize for his achievements in culture and arts.

4 693 PEOPLE VISITED MATENADARAN IN THE FIRST QUARTER OF 2010

In the first quarter of this year 316 groups which is which 4 thousand 693 people, visited Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts, Matenadaran. A great number of people visited especially from Russia, Germany, tourists from France and Italy comprised a smaller number. In the recent period an active flaw of Iranians to Matenadaran has been marked.
About 200 manuscripts of the 5th-18th century are exhibited in two halls of Matenadaran. On the whole, 17 thousand manuscripts are kept in Matenadaran, 14 thousand of which are in Armenian and 3 thousand – in foreign languages.

A WEEK OF NATIONAL LIBRARY TO BE CONDUCTED ON APRIL 12-19

Armenian Library Association organizes on April 12-19 a National Library Week. Events and Public Relations Department of the Armenian National Library told Armenpress that the library week is conducted for the ninth time, this year it is entitled "A view to the rural library". The event which has already become traditional is broadening its frameworks year by year. The goal of the initiative is to give a new meaning to the role of the book, knowledge, libraries, as well as to draw the attention of state figures and society to library issues. Meetings with outstanding figures of science, culture and literature are intended within the frameworks of the week. Exhibitions, presentations of books, multi-content library events will be organized.

The official opening of the National Library Week will be held on April 12 in the National Library of Armenia. The same day an event will be conducted in the library of Oshakan village with the participation of the members of the board of the Armenian National Academy of Sciences. Contests of compositions will be organized in schools on April 13.

April 14 will be declared a "Teryan Day". Events dedicated to V. Teryan’s 125th anniversary will be conducted. The following day a donation of books will be organized in community libraries.

The week will be summed up on April 19 in the National Library.

A 770-YEAR-OLD LEGENDARY MONASTERY IN NAGORNO KARABAKH

The 770th anniversary of the consecration of St. Hovhannes Mkrtich Church of Gandzasar will be celebrated on July 22; on that occasion 2010 has been declared a Year of Gandzasar. The celebration of this event which is of great significance in the country’s spiritual-cultural life.

According to the source the main event is intended on the Day of Vardavar, on July 11, 2010. That day a festive liturgy will be performed by His Holiness T. Pargev, afterwards a sacrifice will be delivered to people. Booklets, films, video clips will be prepared and an internet webpage will be designed.

Pilgrimages, an exhibition of photos and paintings will be organized, a contest of compositions will be organized in schools.

St. Hovhannes Mkrtich Church is Gandzasar's most important structure; it is a large church with a cupola in the inscribed cross plan. The Church was built between 1216 and 1238, and has been hailed as a "crown jewel" and the "encyclopedia" of Armenian architecture by the famous Russian scholar Anatoly. L. TIGRAN HAMASYAN TO PERFORM IN YEREVAN

Tigran Hamasyan, famous Armenian jazz musician from the US, will have a concert on April 5 in Aram Khachaturyan Concert Hall, Yerevan. According to the source the musician will perform with ARATTA REBIRTH band. The concert is organizedwithin the framework of ‘Armenian Jazz-70’ project.
Jazzman Tigran Hamasyan is a prize-winner of a number of competitions and festivals. In 2003 he won the third prize in the international competitions of jazz-pianists in Paris, Moscow, Monaco, won the first prize in the 'Jazz a Juan Revelations-2003' and 'Montreux Jazz Solo Piano Competition-2003' international competitions. Before moving to New York he recorded the 'Red Hall' album in partnership with the ARATTA REBIRTH band.
Tigran Hamasyan performed for the Armenian audience last year within the frames of the 'Open Music' festival.
