AEROFLOT'S DISCOUNTS DO NOT APPLY TO ARMENIA
YEREVAN, DECEMBER 15. ARMINFO. The discounts for internal and international transportation allowed by Aeroflot for the current year will not apply to Armenia, Representative of Aeroflot in Yerevan Gamarnik Ghaghramanyan told ARMINFO.

He said such action is unnecessary in Armenia as Yerevan-Moscow-Yerevan flights are carried out by fully occupied planes. The decision of the Russian air carrier is to some extent connected also with the fines imposed on Aeroflot for unfair competition this year by the Armenian Commission for Protection of Economic Competition.

The specialists of the Commission fixed that Aeroflot had violated the country's legislation when campaigning for halving of ticket prices. The company was accused of not announcing the number of the tickets sold from stock, which created agiotage among the population. Today Yerevan-Moscow- Yerevan ticket costs $300, while from stock it would cost $129.

It is noteworthy that of all the seven members of the Commission, four voted for the decision to fine Aeroflot, the rest three voted against it concerned about possible stoppage of discounts by the Russian company.

www.armeniadiaspora.com

DotEurovision, December 15, The Republic of Armenia hopes to make its debut at the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest.

Yesterday during the annual Armenian Music Awards, it was announced that the country has applied to be included in the 51st contest.
Earlier this month, Diana Mnatsakanyan, the Head of International Relations at the Public TV Company of Armenia confirmed that the broadcaster was interested in taking part next year. Today she commented, "We do have plans to participate, but it is not yet confirmed by EBU."

Bjørn Erichsen, the Director of the EBU Television Department has previously voiced his support for their bid, saying, "We learned how important the Eurovision Song Contest was for Armenian TV. Besides the five hours of highly professional TV entertainment, this programme has a strong symbolic importance. To take part is to be a real and respected member of the live European TV family. And that is important in Armenia."

The EBU has not published a provisional list of participants this year, preferring to keep the line up under wraps until after 23 December, when the deadline passes for broadcasters to withdraw without facing any financial penalty. Broadcasters will learn tomorrow about how much it will cost to take part in 2006 when the EBU notifies provisional participation fees

MADE IN ARMENIA: NEW BOUTIQUE OFFERS ELITE COLLECTION OF ARMENIAN ARTISTRY
An exclusive boutique of Armenian hand-made souvenirs and clothes was inaugurated this week in Yerevan’s center. American –Armenian designer Nina Hovnanian-Alexanian, believes that the expressive name of her boutique “Treasures of Armenia best of all reflects her idea of marketing Armenian products.

“This is not just a souvenir shop, she says. “Armenia does not have rich natural resources but it has other treasures- its people, its culture. What we are trying to do is promoting Armenian products, to create the notion of a luxurious brand, to discover talented designers and to develop the concept of Armenian quality production. Whatever is introduced here has a mission to present Armenia in the best way.

The work of more than 50 Armenian artists and designers are represented in paintings, on women’s suits, embroidered with Armenian ornaments, sculptures and other things. And these are not items for the vernisage shopper: Small holiday ornaments cost about $15, while other pieces range from $100-300, and the most expensive reaches $3,000 for a set of gilded cups and knives.

Hovnanian-Alexanian says that she does not like the idea that exclusive items should be cheap in Armenia, just because it is a developing country.
“Armenia has great stuff, a great potential. I don’t want anybody to think that they have to pay less because it is a developing nation. If a tourist can pay $1,000 for a pair of shoes outside of Armenia I want them to pay $1000 for a pair of shoes in Armenia.
Her personal works, bags with replicas of Armenian prominent painter Martiros Sarian are also on sale in the store, which has a studio next door.

“Our doors are opened for all artists who have talent but do not have a space to exhibit their handicrafts. We accept everything- with the only condition that it should be unique, Armenian and really exclusive, the owner says.

Hovnanian-Alexanian started to work in Armenia as a designer in 1995. In 2001 she founded the Information Center, a guide office for tourists.
She said that after being involved in tourism development for 5 years she realized that Armenia is a great but still undiscovered country which does not have a very distinguishable image and has few chances to represent its culture abroad.

In 2004 Hovnanian-Alexanian founded “Treasures of Armenia: Designers Guild and Armenian Crafts Emporium. However she succeeded to open a store only now. She says that the reason is that the renovation of the building took a lot of time and efforts, because it was old.

The store is located upstairs Abovian 1, next door of Sil Plaza, Armenia’s first up-scale shopping mall. The building was built in 1914 and a number of prominent Armenians lived there, such as prominent doctor Aram Ter-Avetikian, and writer Hovaness Toumanyan.
During Soviet times the building was nationalized and was turned into an apartment building. The designer acquired the building from four families, who were living there in 1999. She first was planning to turn it into an apartment and studio, but then had the idea of creating the boutique and studio.

The shop, too, is a metaphor of sorts for the changing neighborhood. On the street below, pensioners sell trinkets and seeds for pennies, while above them are luxury items unreachable in every way. (Perhaps in unplanned irony, the shop has decorative archways that were salvaged from demolition sites of the Buzand street area, where disadvantaged residents complain about being made homeless by rich entrepreneurs.)
“I love Armenia, says Hovnanian-Alexanian. “ I still feel a little confused about running a business in this country. I heard some horrible stories of people who came from abroad and failed at business here for some unclear reason. But I am hoping that everything will be getting better.

The designer/businesswoman is also planning to open similar Treasures of Armenia stores abroad, or to place a section in the exclusive stores of the USA and Europe.

INTERNATIONAL MOUNTAIN DAY MARKED IN ARMENIA
www.armeniadiaspora.com

Yerevan, December 9, Armenpress: The UN Armenia office started today a two-day seminar to mark the International Mountain Day, celebrated on December 11. Around 50 students from various Armenian universities will deliver their reports.

Ashot Khoyetsian, dean of Geography Department of Yerevan State University, said the International Mountain Day is an opportunity to create awareness about the importance of mountains, to highlight the opportunities and constraints in mountain development and to build partnerships that will bring positive change to the world's mountains and highlands. It was the UN General Assembly who designated 11 December, from 2003 onwards, as 'International Mountain Day'. This decision results from the success of the UN International Year of Mountains in 2002, which increased global awareness of the importance of mountains, stimulated the establishment of national committees in 78 countries and strengthened alliances through promoting the creation of the International Partnership for Sustainable Development in Mountain Regions, known as the 'Mountain Partnership.

Every year, International Mountain Day is observed with a different theme relevant to sustainable mountain development. The theme chosen for International Mountain Day in 2005 is: 'Sustainable Tourism for Poverty Alleviation in Mountain Areas'. Armenia is a mountainous country with high peaks and highland plateaus of volcanic origin. Only 10% of the country lies below 1,000 m, the average level above sea is 1,800 m.

MINAS AVETISIAN'S MUSEUM REOPENS IN JAJOUR
www.armeniadiaspora.com

Yerevan, December 8, Armenpress: A museum in a small village of Jajour in the province of Shirak, where the prominent painter Minas Avetisian was born in 1920, reopened yesterday after undergoing a massive repair. The building was hit severely in the 1988 earthquake. In 2003 part of a generous donation by an Armenian-American billionaire Kirk Kerkorian, was earmarked for its repair.

Though the repair was over in 2004 it stayed empty because there were no paintings of the artist to display. Minasian's family had asked private collectors to donate some of Minas' works and several responded. Other items are copies of his works.

Minas Avetisian is one of few Armenian painters who distinctly influenced Armenian art in the 20th century. He intertwines his own artistic personality into his work, using bright colors and mixed media to pay tribute to the cultures and traditions of Armenia.

EGYPTIAN ARMENIANS TODAY
www.armeniadiaspora.com

Yerevan, December 5, Armenpress: Most of current Armenian Egyptians who are permanent residents of Egypt were born in Egypt. Armenian Egyptians are full Egyptians with an extra cultural layer. Their small community numbered around 8,000(before 1952 there were around 60,000 Armenians in Egypt) is in Cairo and Alexandria.

Clubs, schools, and sports facilities run by Armenian Egyptians, the Armenian Church and the apolitical structure of the Armenian community have a very important role in unifying Armenians in Egypt. Armenian Egyptians work in the private sector, as successful businessmen, skilled handicraftsmen (especially as jewelers). Since the beginning of the nineteenth century, Armenians fled to Egypt from the Ottoman Turkey with a range of skills in the field of business, commerce, and finance. In addition they came to Egypt mastering foreign languages. Nowadays, Armenians who master foreign languages work in offices and branches of international organizations as well as foreign embassies in Cairo.

The Armenian community operates two benevolent and one cultural associations, the Armenian Red Cross Association, the Armenian General Benevolent Union and the Houssaper Cultural Association. The community has four social clubs in Cairo and two in Alexandria, in addition to three sporting clubs in the capital and two in Alexandria. There is one home for the elderly, and many activities for young people, including a dance troupe, Zankezour, a choir, Zevartnots, and a children's choir, Dzaghgasdan. Egyptian Armenians run two daily papers and one weekly publication. Armenian Egyptians are divided into Orthodox (Gregorians) and Catholics. Catholics comprise the majority of Armenian Egyptians. There are five Armenian churches in Egypt, one in Alexandria and four in Cairo:

The Prelacy of the Armenian Church in Egypt, which is under the jurisdiction of Holy Etchmiadzin, is the primary guardian of community assets such as endowments, real estate in the form of agricultural land and other property bequeathed by generations of philanthropists. The most famous Egyptian Armenian is Boghos Nubar Pasha (1825 - 1899), Egyptian statesman, politician and the first Prime Minister of Egypt.
