Traveler Safety

Yerevan, by any comparative measure, is a very safe city for its size (about 1 million people), and safer than most cities in the United States. Random crimes against individuals such as muggings, robbery, etc. are rare. Nevertheless, it is always prudent not to make yourself a target. Keep to well-lit, main streets at night, take taxis anytime after 10 PM, and travel with escorts whenever possible. Avoid displaying large sums of money; be aware of your surroundings and any suspicious individuals. Large markets such as the Vernissage or Hrazdan are attractive to pickpockets because of the hustle and bustle and the crowds. Do not carry purses or backpacks which can be easily opened. Economic hardship has brought with it an influx of beggars and street children, but most are harmless.

In case of International Emergency Register at Embassy, and always carry a copy of your passport for identification. It is not necessary to carry your passport on you for identification; a copy of it should suffice.

Words of Caution / Helpful Hints

  • Automobiles have right of way. Be very careful crossing streets as a pedestrian. (This is very serious.)
  • When traveling in the regions, always carry toilet paper with you, just to be on the safe side.
  • Sidewalks are often uneven and other hazards are rarely marked so be careful where you walk.
  • Armenians don't tend to wait in line and if you do, you may never reach the front.
  • Clerks, waiters, etc., often won't wait on you unless prompted to do so. Some may follow you around as if you're shoplifting, trying to be "too" helpful. Just try to ignore them.
